IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF GYNECOMASTIA
Each year, countless men face self-esteem challenges related to gynecomastia, a common condition that causes a more feminine upper body appearance. They might feel embarrassed to take their shirt off in public or be intimate with their partners. Studies show that gynecomastia — also known as male breast enlargement — affects at least 30% of men, and by some estimates, more than half of all men may experience it by age 50 as testosterone levels decline.
If you’re frustrated by the appearance of your chest, PURE Plastic Surgery has a solution that can help you regain your mojo: male breast reduction. This surgical procedure can sculpt a more masculine upper body to help you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.
WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is a condition that makes the breast tissue of boys and men swell. While both men and women have breast tissue, the male breast is usually much smaller than its female counterpart. With gynecomastia, the breasts become larger and take on a more feminized appearance, often due to an imbalance of hormones in the body. In addition to enlarged breast tissue, pain, tenderness and other symptoms may also be present.
Gynecomastia can happen in younger boys but also develops in older men as testosterone levels drop. Other factors contributing to gynecomastia include health conditions and the use of certain medications, including antidepressants, antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs. Although not usually harmful, gynecomastia can cause significant emotional and psychological distress, negatively impacting a person’s self-esteem and overall quality of life.
MALE BREAST REDUCTION FOR GYNECOMASTIA
If the exact cause of enlarged breast tissue is known, the condition can be improved with proper treatment. However, some men may need surgery to improve their symptoms. Male breast reduction is often the most effective treatment option for gynecomastia. It involves the removal of fat deposits and breast tissue to sculpt flatter, firmer and more masculine chest contours.
At PURE Plastic Surgery, our experienced and board-certified plastic surgeons can evaluate your concerns during a consultation to determine if male breast reduction surgery is right for you. We believe in a patient-centered approach to care and will develop a highly personalized treatment plan that meets your needs, utilizing the latest techniques for optimal results.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY?
Gynecomastia can occur for several reasons. Sometimes, the issue is caused by excess fat and can be addressed through diet or exercise, but that isn’t always the case. Because gynecomastia is often the result of hormonal imbalances, many men are unlikely to see substantial improvements without surgery. If you’re bothered by enlarged, swollen breast tissue and a feminized chest appearance that hasn’t improved with lifestyle changes, male breast reduction might be right for you. Ideal candidates for this procedure include:
- Men who want to achieve more masculine chest contours
- Men who feel self-conscious about their breast appearance
- Men who are in good overall health with no underlying health conditions
- Men who don’t smoke or use performance-enhancing steroids
Book a consultation with one of our surgeons or care coordinators at PURE Plastic Surgery to find out if gynecomastia surgery is right for you. Together, we can explore your treatment options and develop a tailored surgical plan to help you achieve your goals.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING MALE BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY
When it comes to gynecomastia, there are a few different techniques available for sculpting a more masculine chest. The best approach may vary depending on your unique needs, but the surgical options that we most often utilize are liposuction and excision of the breast tissue.
Liposuction
This technique is typically used when breast enlargement is due to fatty deposits, rather than enlarged breast tissue (pseudogynecomastia). During this procedure, your surgeon will first make an incision through which a small, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted to remove excess fat. Liposuction is a less invasive treatment option with a relatively quick recovery.
Excision
If gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances and characterized by an excess of glandular tissue, excision is preferred. This technique involves making an incision in the chest to allow your surgeon to remove the excess skin and breast tissue, causing a feminized appearance.
Liposuction + Excision
When enlarged breast tissue is more pronounced and excess fat is also present in the chest, a combination of liposuction and excision can provide the best results. This approach allows your surgeon to remove fatty deposits and glandular tissue to sculpt more masculine contours.
Removing Excess Fat and Breast Tissue
During your procedure, your surgeon will make an incision in the chest to access the underlying fat and breast tissue. If liposuction is being used, a cannula will be inserted beneath the skin to dislodge and vacuum out unwanted fatty deposits, sculpting firmer and more masculine chest contours. If excision is deemed necessary, excess glandular tissue and skin will also be carefully removed. Your surgeon may also use both techniques to achieve your desired results.
Your incisions will then be closed, and you’ll be brought to the recovery room as the anesthesia wears off. Either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation may be utilized.

RESULTS*
Revealing the final results of your male breast reduction surgery is often a highly rewarding experience. As swelling decreases, you’ll notice a flatter, firmer chest and more masculine contours that help you feel confident and comfortable with your appearance. You can expect these improvements to be long-lasting, as once excess fat and glandular tissue is removed, it’s gone for good. However, factors like weight gain, steroid use or certain medications could lead to a recurrence of gynecomastia, causing the remaining breast tissue to swell again. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle ensures that you’ll enjoy your new contours for years.
RECOVERY*
Male breast reduction recovery is typically mild, with minor side effects such as swelling, bruising and discomfort occurring immediately after your surgery in the treated area. Your chest will be bandaged, and you’ll be instructed to wear compression garments or wraps to minimize swelling and support your new contours. Most men are able to return to work after three to four days, but more strenuous activities should be avoided, as directed by your surgeon.
Follow-up visits will be scheduled so our team can monitor your recovery progress and advise you on when you can return to normal activities. Keep in mind that everyone heals at a different pace, so it’s important to listen to your body and not rush the process. Should you have any concerns or questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us — our goal is to ensure that you always feel supported and have a smooth recovery to ensure the best outcome possible.
